Demon Slayer Episode 21 Review
DEMON SLAYER: KIMETSU NO YAIBA
Episode 21 “ Against Corps rules” brought to a close the seven episode arc of the Natagumo Mountain Arc. Episode 21 ramps down the action from episode 19 from the fan favorite episode Hinokami. This does not mean that episode 21 against Corp Rules does not have great things to offer to the show.
Pros: The pro of this episode is it provides much needed context of who Rui was. What makes a great villain specific to shounen is their ability to make us feel something for the tragic villain. Rui was no exception to this rule we see he was miserable in life because he was given a weak body and was unable to build genuine bonds with anyone. In this episode they also break down the importance of family and how a genuine bond is a necessity of survival in the demon slayer world.
Cons:As well written and beautiful looking Demon Slayer is , Everything will always have drawbacks. This episode of demon slayer gave us a story of the tragic villain Rui who has slaughtered hordes and hordes of humans. With this sitting in the back of your mind it makes it very difficult to feel empathy for them I won’t argue it is a common trope in Shounen to make us feel empathy for the villain but it did not work as well this time around. This didn’t work for me because for the last two episodes we have seen Rui torture his pretend family members and kill countless Demon Slayer corps troupes. I found it kind of unbelievable that Rui in the end would find some clarity to his past actions considering he has had decades to consider them.
Verdict: Overall this episode of Demon Slayer was well written and is going to have us deal with the fall out of the Demon Slayer corps now knowing of Nezuko. I think this episode sets it up perfectly for a problem I have been worrying about which is “ what will happen when he runs into Demon Slayer corp while traveling with Nezuko”.
While weighing the pros and cons of this episode and What it has to offer I am giving it a 8.2/10.
Episode 98 “ The Sleeping Lion ” is the 14th episode in the reincarnation arc. This episode is definitely one of the better episodes that this arc has to offer with its action sequences and character development of character’s that don’t get the screen time they deserve (I’m looking at you Leo).
Pros: As already mentioned this episode had much to offer to the over arching story of the Elves versus the Humans. This episode in specific continues the story of the reincarnation and gives us a better perspective of how many elves were reincarnated via Patori’s 90+ episode mission. The first Pro of this episode was the Character development it gave us for Leo. This episode displayed how adept at fighting Leo truly is being able to read his opponents seemingly invisible magic. This story also foreshadows a potential awakening for Leo which only gives more depth to his overall character. Another Pro of this episode is giving us more story and clarification as to what happen to Fugeoleon on the day of the attack on the capital. The sleeping Lion episode has much to offer in terms of sheer story and character development but falls flat in other aspects.
Cons: A running theme for Black Clover criticism is the animation quality. In most cases the animation does not take away from the quality of the story telling, development of the story and it’s character development. However, in episode 98 Manga readers would be disappointed with the reveal of Fuegoleon’s return not being as cinematic as many of us had hoped. In the Manga the reveal that Fuegoleon has been chosen by the Salamander spirt was nothing more than a spectacle but somehow the animated adaption falls flat in comparison.
Verdict: Overall this episode of black clover was definitely not black clover at its peak. The sub par quality of the animation really deters some of this episodes finest moments.
While weighing the pros and cons of this episode and What it has to offer I am giving it a 8/10
